WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE
CHILD SAFETY PROGRAMME?
As we collaborate with international Christian organizations to connect, educate, and protect, we have found that there are seven key elements that must be in place in order to establish and maintain effective child safety practices.
We help create environments worldwide where children’s wellbeing and safety are a priority.
GOVERNANCE
An organization with an effective child safety programme will have the management controls necessary to govern the activities of its personnel (staff and volunteers) so that a safe and healthy environment for children can be maintained.
DEFINITIONS
An organization with an effective child safety programme will have a written set of basic definitions of the types of harm children may suffer. The definitions will be written keeping in mind the various cultures represented in the organization’s context.
SCREENING
An organization with an effective child safety programme will conduct preengagement screening of both staff and volunteers.
TRAINING
An organization with an effective child safety programme will have a training programme for all staff and volunteers.
CHILDCARE PROTOCOLS
An organization with an effective child safety programme will have childcare protocols that are commonly applied throughout the organization.
RESPONSE PROCESS
An organization with an effective child safety programme will have established and maintains the capacity to respond promptly, objectively and compassionately to any report of concern for child safety, whether based on current events or in past history of the organization or its members.
MEMBER CARE
An organization with an effective child safety programme will provide care for its personnel and other persons who may be affected by child safety issues, as needs are assessed.
